Director’s Statement

“That’s how they get you - they make the corruption so boring that no one cares to look into it.”

- El Rivken, “City of Ghosts”

This line that Eleanor speaks, midway through the series, is really at the heart of City of Ghosts. It’s a story about the machinations of power in one of the country’s oldest cities that keep it running, serving the rich and the powerful. It’s about the way that wealth enables entrenched interests to stay entrenched. And yes… it’s also about ghosts - the burdens that we carry ourselves, the whisps of those who lived in The Great City before us… and yes, also supernatural apparitions.

Carina Green, my co-creator, and I have been working on this project for over two years, sneaking in writing sessions late at night or early in the morning, or commandeering conference rooms in offices all-day during the weekend. When COVID-19 hit and the entertainment industry shut down, we saw a great opportunity to rally a bunch of actors who just wanted to act. Eisenberg/Beans casting helped us shape an amazing cast of incredible performers, and we shipped them all recording equipment and everyone recorded themselves in-home.

It was a splendid success, and we hope you agree when you hear the series, which we’re excited to share with you this fall.

Sincerely,

Ryan Patch, co-creator and director
